Reading Recommendations?

So this is the current pile of books that I am reading or have yet to read, not counting the few books I have on my Kindle.

Now that I have the Kindle I will be reading on it as well. So if any of you have any book recommendations, please let me know. I am interested in reading classic books as well as modern literature, so I guess recommend anything from Oscar Wilde to Stieg Larsson.

Sherlock: a follow up

I have just seen this weeks episode of Sherlock, the final in this series. If you haven’t seen it yet, you probably don’t want to read this post.

My blog post last week about Sherlock was some what negative, but as someone pointed out, Hound of the Baskervilles was always going to be a tough one to produce.

Well the BBC has redeemed itself this week completely! This weeks episode was based on on ‘The Final Problem’. While the story was substantially different from the book, the underlying premise was the same. Moriarty, want’s to destroy Sherlock. I have to say, I was thorougly creeped out by Moriarty in this episode!

I’m currently working my way through ‘The Return of Sherlock Holmes’ novel, so I knew the outcome at the end was coming, but even still, I was gripped the whole way through the episode.

If there was one thing I would have changed it would have been to have a more subtle indication at  the end of the episode about Holmes’s fate, rather than so obviously showing him on screen, but other than that I think it was absolutely fantastic and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Any of you catch the latest episode?

Kindle

Normally every Christmas I get a few books as gifts from people. This year was no exception, but my wonderful wife went one better than that. Lorraine this year, didn’t buy me any books as such, but she did buy me one of these.

The new Kindle. I was completely surprised by getting the Kindle. I think I may have mentioned to her in passing that I was thinking about getting one. I was always reluctant about reading e-books, I much preferred to have and read an actual book, and didnt like the idea of reading off a screen.

When I got my iPad last year though I began to read some ebooks on it. The Kindle is so different to reading on the iPad though, and is much nicer to read on, the iPad has a backlit screen, whereas the Kindle used e-ink technology, which makes it like reading off an actual page.

I guess some of the main advantages are that there are a number of books that are only available in ebook format. Also any works that are out of copyright are available as free ebooks, for example the Sherlock Holmes novels. You also get a lot of books much cheaper in ebook format. I don’t think that ebooks will ever completely replace real books, and I still love to get a physical book, and sit down and read it, but I think that having such easy access to ebooks will mean that I read a lot more this year.

A New perspective on Birds

Over the past number of years, the wildlife and nature documentaries that the BBC has been producing have been fantastic. Planet Earth, Life, and most recently Frozen Planet. The one that I have been enjoying the most recently however is, Earthflight.

For starters it is refreshing to hear someone other than David Attenborough narrating a show like this. David Tennant provides the commentary for this show which has some of the most extraordinary footage of birds in flight. They use a variety of techniques to get the amazing shots, including training birds to fly alongside a micro lite, and also attaching small cameras to the birds.

If you haven’t been watching this, I highly recommend that you check it out on BBC iplayer, and if you can watch it in HD, do, because it is simple stunning.
