Kindle

Normally every Christmas I get a few books as gifts from people. This year was no exception, but my wonderful wife went one better than that. Lorraine this year, didn’t buy me any books as such, but she did buy me one of these.

The new Kindle. I was completely surprised by getting the Kindle. I think I may have mentioned to her in passing that I was thinking about getting one. I was always reluctant about reading e-books, I much preferred to have and read an actual book, and didnt like the idea of reading off a screen.

When I got my iPad last year though I began to read some ebooks on it. The Kindle is so different to reading on the iPad though, and is much nicer to read on, the iPad has a backlit screen, whereas the Kindle used e-ink technology, which makes it like reading off an actual page.

I guess some of the main advantages are that there are a number of books that are only available in ebook format. Also any works that are out of copyright are available as free ebooks, for example the Sherlock Holmes novels. You also get a lot of books much cheaper in ebook format. I don’t think that ebooks will ever completely replace real books, and I still love to get a physical book, and sit down and read it, but I think that having such easy access to ebooks will mean that I read a lot more this year.

I was totally the same, I love reading books, and still do, I alternate between the two. but I find the kindle is brilliant , mainly cause u don’t have to turn pages!!! also I find i read alot faster on it too than i do a normal book!!

Good to have best of both worlds.

A couple of family members got Kindles at Christmas, but I’m still not convinced. Perhaps it’s the thought of replacing the huge library I’ve accumulated over fifteen years (currently filling my study and a bedroom), partly my preference for real books. I love secondhand bookshops and finding bargains surely as cheap as any ebook?

I started to be convinced when I got my iPad, and now love the Kindle, and Clara, I agree, I am reading much quicker on the Kindle.

I still love to get real books though, and I will still buy certain books…
